Coggins tests are good for 6 months. 5. In order to travel from state to state you must have in addition to the Coggins test a health certificate or horse passport (the type of document depends on where you will be traveling to). These documents are good for 30 days and 6 months respectively.
Horses must also have a current coggins to be issued a health certificate. Some states also require a travel permit in addition to a health certificate. A Coggins Test tests for the prevalence of Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA). All horses traveling to and from horse events (shows, auctions, etc.)
To perform a Coggins test, a licensed veterinarian must draw blood from the horse and send it to an accredited lab for analysis. The lab will conduct a test to detect the EIA antibody (a protein that allows the body to recognize the EIA virus; this will only be present if the horse has had the EIA virus).
Generally, yearly testing is required if you will be transporting your horse for any reason, but some states or organized shows may require a negative test within 6 months of importation.
