Small, localized deposits of dirt may be reduced by gentle rubbing with a surface cleaning sponge or a piece of a vinyl block eraser. When using the latter, cut the eraser into a wedge, pencil-point, or whatever will result in the best cleaning shape for this piece.
Place enough baking soda onto the paper so that it completely covers the stain and leave overnight. The baking soda should be in a relatively tall pile. If you can still see the paper through the baking soda, add more! Other non-staining absorbent powders will also work for this step.
Vulcanized natural rubber sponges can be very useful when cleaning paper. Sponges are more effective than brushes, but have greater potential for damage. They are not as effective or abrasive as plastic erasers. Suitable sponges are available from several archival supply companies.
Stains: Put a small amount of rubbing alcohol on a cloth and rub away the stains. Use a clean white cloth to prevent dirt and color from transferring onto the cover. Repeat the process on heavily stained areas. Smudges: Use an eraser to remove pencil marks and other smudges.
Using very light pressure, sweep the brush slowly and gently over surfaces to remove loose dirt and debris. Start in the middle of the document and brush toward the edges, brushing in one direction and in a straight line.
Next remove soot from paper by use of chemical sponges, erasers, or a dry cleaner such as Groomstik or Absorene Paper Book Cleaner which is available from archival supply companies such as Light Impressions, Archival Quality Materials, or Demco. Use chemical sponges in a gentle, dabbing motion.
Damp cloth: If the dirt stain is stubborn and cannot be brushed away, a damp cotton swab or microfiber cloth works pretty well. Hold the print vertically and rub the blemish gently. Wipe off the moisture with a dry cloth and place the artwork in direct sunlight for quick drying.
Some stains can often be improved with a kneaded rubber eraser or Absorene Paper and Book Cleaner. Knead a small amount of Absorene in your hand until it is soft and rub it lightly in one direction over the soiled surface.
It depends on whether the stain has dried or not. If it is dry, very carefully dab water onto the paper and slowly peel it off. If it is still wet, use tweezers or a spoon to take it off, then place the paper on or under a surface giving cold air. Warm or hot air can cause the paper to tear or wrinkle.
Document cleaning powder can help lift surface dust, dirt and grime from documents, as well as remove oil left from fingerprints. This type of powder is very soft and free of grit. It can be applied to a pad or purchased in a pad form. You would then rub it gently across the surface of the document to clean it.
