The process of obtaining a South African ID as a foreign national involves several legal procedures outlined by the government. Before starting the application process, ensure that you meet the eligibility criteria set by the government. This includes being a permanent resident of South Africa.

If you are a naturalised citizen or a permanent residence permit holder you must attach the following to your application form: your naturalisation certificate and a copy, which will be certified by Home Affairs.
Applications take six (6) months or more to be finalized. Emergency travel certificates are issued at South African missions abroad and take only three (3) weeks to be finalized.
