Commonly Asked Questions about Coggins test Order Forms

Things to remember when filling out the Coggins form: All EIA test forms, regardless of additional identifiers must include name (if horse is named), age, breed, color and gender for the horse being tested. It is important to indicate months or years when declaring the age.
Horse owners use Coggins papers as proof of negative test results. These results expire one year after the testing date, so annual testing is necessary. Coggins papers include critical information about the horses owner, stable/environment, and veterinarian.
The cost of a Coggins test of course can vary but we have seen them in the range of $20 on the low side to $100 on the high side depending on how much work the vet has to do, the location of the horse and distance to the lab.
To perform a Coggins test, a licensed veterinarian must draw blood from the horse and send it to an accredited lab for analysis. The lab will conduct a test to detect the EIA antibody (a protein that allows the body to recognize the EIA virus; this will only be present if the horse has had the EIA virus).
A negative Coggins test is typically required before your horse can take part in competitions and events, and testing is highly recommended for all horses that spend time near other horses whether in fields or boarding stables.
Guidelines for taking digital photographs for Coggins: There must be three images, one of the entire left side, entire right side and one of the face, including muzzle and ears. Each leg must be visible all the way to the coronets. The horse should fill approximately 90% of the photo, minimal human content in photo.
Things to remember when filling out the Coggins form: The submitting veterinarian must include his or her license or accreditation number, contact information, the test type they are requesting, the physical location of the horse and they must sign and date the form.
You can create and submit electronic Coggins forms in the Veterinary Services Process Streamline (VSPS) system or request paper copies from your local Veterinary Services Area Office.
