In general, you can apply for your first work permit 150 days or more after submitting your asylum application (Form I-589) to USCIS or the immigration court. You can receive your work permit after at least 180 days have passed since you submitted your asylum application.
We will accept your Form I-589, send it to the EOIR immigration court where your proceedings are pending, and notify you by mail. EOIR will adjudicate your Form I-589. The date USCIS receipted your Form I-589 will serve as the filing date for the purpose of the asylum one-year filing deadline.
Form I-589 Instructions 01/20/25. This application is used to apply for asylum in the United States and for withholding of removal (formerly called withholding of deportation). This application may also be used to apply for protection under the Convention Against Torture.
