1. Click ‘Get Form’ to open the 2016 Form 589 in the editor.
2. In Part I, enter the Withholding Agent's information. Select the appropriate TIN type (SSN, ITIN, FEIN, etc.) and fill in the business name, address, and contact details.
3. Move to Part II for the Payee's information. Again, select the correct TIN type and provide either individual or business details as applicable.
4. In Part III, check one box that corresponds to the type of income subject to withholding. Ensure you also enter the date(s) of service accurately.
5. Proceed to Part IV for Withholding Computation. Fill in line 1 with the gross California source payment expected. Then list any direct expenses on lines 2 through 11.
6. Calculate total expenses on line 12 and determine your net California source payment by subtracting line 12 from line 1 on line 13.
7. Finally, calculate your withholding amount by multiplying line 13 by 7% on line 14. Ensure all fields are completed before signing at the bottom.
