Form 990-EZ requirements Most tax-exempt organizations with gross receipts less than $200,000 and total assets at the end of the year less than $500,000 can file Form 990-EZ instead of Form 990. Exceptions to this include: Sponsoring organizations of donor advised funds. Organizations that operate a hospital facility.
For tax years ending before July 31, 2021, the IRS will accept either paper or electronic filing of Form 990-EZ, Short Form Return of Organization Exempt from Income Tax. For tax years ending July 31, 2021, and later, Forms 990-EZ must be filed electronically.
If an organization fails to file a required return by the due date (including any extensions of time), it must pay a penalty of $20 a day for each day the return is late. The same penalty applies if the organization does not give all the information required on the return or does not give the correct information.
Form 990 is for tax-exempt organizations with gross receipts of $200,000 or more (or) total assets of $500,000 or more, whereas Form 990-EZ is for organizations with gross receipts less than $200,000 (and) total assets less than $500,000.
Organizations with gross receipts less than $1,020,000 for its tax year will have a penalty of $20/day for each day that the return is late. The maximum penalty for these organizations is $10,000 or 5 percent of the organizations gross receipts, whichever is less.
