The 990-EZ is considered the short-form return (as compared to the full Form 990), although it is more in-depth than the 990-N postcard. This four-page return is required of organizations with annual gross receipts between $50,000 and $200,000.
The full-length 990 form is required for nonprofits who gross $200,000 or more in total receipts, or total assets of $500,000 or more. The 990-EZ and 990-N are for nonprofits who grossed less during the year (over $50,000 in total gross receipts and under $50,000 respectively). The 990-PF is for private foundations.
With a few exceptions, most tax-exempt organizations that file Forms 990, 990-EZ, 990-PF or 1120-POL can file electronically.
In order to qualify to file Form 990-EZ, a nonprofit should have gross income of more than $50,000, but less than $200,000 during the past fiscal year. In addition, the total valuation of all assets should be less than $500,000.
Only those organizations with gross receipts of less than $200,000 and total assets of less than $500,000 at the end of the tax year can use Form 990-EZ. If the organization doesnt meet these requirements, it must file Form 990, unless excepted under General Instruction B, earlier.
