Wheelchairs, scooters and other mobility equipment is classed as assistive equipment, so the airlines will consider this different to standard luggage so it does not count towards your baggage allowance.
Transporting a mobility scooter on an airplane is free, and on top of this, ing to the FAA and ADA, there are no additional baggage fees to transport your medical devices.
Where can I find my serial number? The serial number begins with an L and is found on the frame on the back of the unit. The serial number starts with an S and is located on the seat post. The battery pack may need to be removed.
Larger 4-6 mph mobility scooters are not possible to take on planes, only highly compact or specifically dedicated travel scooters are allowed.
Lithium ion battery size is limited to 300 watt hours (Wh). One spare battery not exceeding 300 Wh or two spare batteries not exceeding 160 Wh each may be carried in carry-on baggage. Lithium metal (non-rechargeable lithium) batteries are forbidden with these devices.
Most airlines do not charge extra for bringing a mobility scooter on a plane, as they are classified as assistive equipment and are excluded from the baggage allowance. However, its always a good idea to double-check with your chosen airline to make sure you wont encounter any unexpected fees.
