Tailgate Safety Talks are short, informal safety meetings conducted at the crew level on a periodic and as-needed basis, by first line supervisors regarding job-related hazards and safe work practices.
OSHA training standards generally require the employer and trainers to sign a certification record which includes the identity of the person(s) trained; signatures of the employees are not required.
Tailgate or Toolbox meetings must address the specific hazards and safe work practices for the work tasks that employees are actually performing. Hold meetings at the start of shifts or after breaks. Find a comfortable location for employees. Keep meetings brief (i.e., no longer than 15 minutes) and focused on the topics.
How often must we meet? You must have safety meetings monthly or quarterly depending on what your business does. If you have construction workers: Meet at least monthly and meet before the start of each job that lasts more than one week. If your employees do mostly office work: Meet at least quarterly.
When Should You Have a Safety Meeting? OSHA requires any organization, big or small, to conduct safety meetings monthly or quarterly. Because humans are creatures of habit, you should make safety meetings part of your teams routine by scheduling meetings at the same time on the same day of the month.
