Its name is derived from the nickname for New York, the Empire State. It stood as the worlds tallest building for 40 years, from its completion in 1931 until construction of the World Trade Centers North Tower was completed in 1972.
WHYS IT CALLED THAT? New York was named after the British Duke of York. Many experts believe its nicknamed the Empire State because George Washington called New York the seat of the Empire.
The Dutch first settled along the Hudson River in 1624 and established the colony of New Amsterdam on Manhattan Island. In 1664, the English took control of the area and renamed it New York. One of the original 13 colonies, New York played a crucial political and strategic role during the American Revolution.
Following its capture, New Amsterdams name was changed to New York, in honor of the Duke of York, who organized the mission. The colony of New Netherland was established by the Dutch West India Company in 1624 and grew to encompass all of present-day New York City and parts of Long Island, Connecticut and New Jersey.
