The Child Tax Credit and the Additional Child Tax Credit are meant to help working parents with low to moderate incomes. For that reason, families must have a minimum of $2,500 of earned income to claim the ACTC. Earned income can come from salaries and wages, self-employment, and some disability payments.
The Additional Child Tax Credit is capped at $1,700 per qualifying child for the 2024 tax year (it will stay at this amount for 2025). So, for example, if you have two qualifying children, the refundable portion of the Child Tax Credit cant be more than $3,400 (2 x $1,700 = $3,400).
Who is eligible for the Child Tax Credit? Nearly all families with children qualify. Families will get the full amount of the Child Tax Credit if they make less than $150,000 (two parents) or $112,500 (single parent).
In order to get that credit, you have to have income from working. The credit is calculated based on the amount you earned above $2500 multiplied by 15%, up to the full $1700 per child. If the amount you earned was too low, you will not get the full $1700.
