A: Nearly all minors ages 14 through 17 who wish to work in Indiana are required to obtain a work permit. Work permits are obtained from the accredited high school in the school district where the minor resides. To obtain a work permit, a minor must first be hired by an employer.
Effective 7/1/2021, Indiana will no longer require work permits for minor employees. Employers will no longer be required to complete the \u201cIntent to Employ\u201d form, and schools will no longer issue work permits.

Effective July 1, 2021, Indiana eliminated work permits completely, and now requires all employers with five or more minor employees (under age 18) to use Indiana Department of Labor's Youth Employment System (YES) to track and report minor-employee information.
It is a criminal offence to employ a child of compulsory school age without an employment permit, to employ a child under the age of 13, or to breach any regulations regarding the employment of children. We will take legal action against anyone committing such offences.
During school, 14 and 15 year-olds may work 3 hours a day, 18 hours a week, from 7am \u2013 7pm, as long as it doesn't interfere with their school attendance. 16 and 17 year-olds may work 8 hours a day, 30 hours a week (with a max of 6 days a week) from 6:00am-10:00pm, again if it doesn't affect school attendance.
