FLORIDA LEGISLATURE Description The elected members of the Legislature, 40 Senators and 120 Representatives, meet each year during the Legislative Session to establish laws that govern the state which are then compiled as the Florida Statutes.
The legislature is composed of 160 state legislators (120 in the House and 40 in the Senate). The primary purpose of the legislature is to enact new laws and amend or repeal existing laws. It meets in the Florida State Capitol building in Tallahassee.
The compensation for most Senators, Representatives, Delegates, and the Resident Commissioner from Puerto Rico is $174,000. These levels have remained unchanged since 2009.
Representatives serve two-year terms and are limited to four terms. Vacancies in legislative offices may be filled only by election.
