FLORIDA LEGISLATURE Description The elected members of the Legislature, 40 Senators and 120 Representatives, meet each year during the Legislative Session to establish laws that govern the state which are then compiled as the Florida Statutes.
Representatives serve two-year terms and are limited to four terms. Vacancies in legislative offices may be filled only by election.
Among other powers, the legislative branch makes all laws, declares war, regulates interstate and foreign commerce and controls taxing and spending policies. The following are legislative branch organizations: Architect of the Capitol (AOC) Center for Legislative Archives, National Archives and Records Administration.
Currently, 40 senators and 120 members of the House of Representatives serve the people of Florida. Members of the Senate and House must be at least 21 years old and a resident of the district where they have been elected and must have lived in Florida for two years before running for election.
All 50 states have legislatures made up of elected representatives, who consider matters brought forth by the governor or introduced by its members to create legislation that becomes law. The legislature also approves a states budget and initiates tax legislation and articles of impeachment.
