Canagliflozin is indicated for patients with type 2 diabetes to improve glycemic control as monotherapy or in combination with metformin; a sulfonylurea; metformin and a sulfonylurea; metformin and pioglitazone; or insulin (with or without metformin) when these drugs do not provide adequate glycemic control.
Check with your doctor if you have severe nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea that does not stop. This may cause you to lose too much water. Ketoacidosis (high ketones and acid in the blood) may occur while you are using this medicine. This can be life-threatening and requires immediate medical attention.
Its best to take metformin tablets with, or just after, your evening meal to reduce the chance of getting side effects. Swallow your metformin tablets whole with a drink of water. Do not chew them. If youre taking metformin sachets, pour the powder into a glass and add water (about 150ml).
Food such as high- meals do not affect the bioavailability of canagliflozin; it can be taken with or without food. With the potential to reduce postprandial glucose excursions, canagliflozin is recommended before the days first meal.
