Lure Coursing is a test of the dogs ability to work by sight without showing signs of undue stress or lack of fitness. It tests the dogs instinct, physical structure and temperament. Judges assess performance by observing the dogs agility, enthusiasm, endurance, speed and follow through the course.
How is Lure Coursing scored?
In Lure Coursing Trials, judges score hounds for a maximum score of 50 points based on overall ability (10), follow (10), speed (10), agility (10), and endurance (10).
How long is a lure coursing course?
A typical lure course in the United States is between 600 and 1,000 yards (550 and 910 m) long. In Europe, as well as the rest of the world, the course length can be over 1000 meters, and often incorporates some obstacles or jumps.
How does lure coursing work?
Lure coursing is a system of mechanized lures and pulleys that simulate the unpredictability of chasing live prey. Dogs are evaluated for their ability to run with speed, agility, and endurance as they pursue an artificial lure zig-zagging across an open field.
Is lure coursing safe for dogs?
Lure coursing, like most physical dog sports does carry with it the risk for injury. I have seen some severe injuries by dogs getting caught up in the line. I have seen (very rarely) hounds get dismissed for aggression. I have seen skin tears happen from incidental contact when dogs werent wearing muzzles.
One of the easiest ways to get involved in the world of dog sports is with a Coursing Ability Test (CAT). Designed specifically for newcomers, each dog chases after an artificial lure on either a 300- or 600-yard long course and must finish in less 1 minutes and 2 minutes, respectively.
