Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans is an aggressive form of skin cancer in children. It has a slow growth rate and low chance of metastasizing but is notorious for its aggressive invasive and recurrent nature.
Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) stands as a rare soft tissue sarcoma that emerges in the dermis and is often found on the trunk and proximal extremities. This condition can present as a slowly developing, robust plaque, exhibiting shades of pink or violet, underscoring the challenge of timely diagnosis.
Signs and symptoms A slow growing and often painless lump under the skin. A scar or a deep-seated pimple on the skin, that may easily open or bleed.
If caught early, as with all skin cancers, success rates are quite high. Treating DFSP with Mohs micrographic surgery has a 98 percent cure rate.
Early dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans starts as a firm area just beneath the skin. It can cause the surrounding skin and tissues to turn greyish or red-brown. DFSP grows slowly but steadily, with several pimple-like bumps forming, colored either red-brown or violet.
