Breathing in very small (respirable) crystalline silica particles, causes multiple diseases, including silicosis, an incurable lung disease that leads to disability and death. Respirable crystalline silica also causes lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and kidney disease.
Recognizing that very small, respirable silica particles are hazardous, OSHA regulation 29 CFR 1926.55(a) requires construction employers to keep worker exposures at or below a Permissible Exposure Level (PEL) of 50 g/m3.
The recommended daily intake of silica for adults is 10 to 40 mg/day. Silica is found in plants and some herbs. As seen previously, it is present in foods rich in fiber, including whole grains, rice, fruits and vegetables.
