YCP is a military style alternative educational program. Students cannot be sentenced or court ordered to attend. The decision to attend should be made by the applicant and family.
The NGYCP is a Defense Department program administered by the National Guard Bureau. Its goal is to get teenagers on track toward graduating from high school and on to a promising future.
SC Youth ChalleNGe Academy is a tuition-free program. Guardians are only responsible for purchasing a list of hygiene and toiletry items, undergarments, and other necessities.
There is no cost to attend the National Guard Youth Challenge Program. It is operated through a Cooperative Agreement between the National Guard Bureau and the program state. It is funded by Federal and State dollars.
In total, YCP is a 17 month program which consists of two phases. During the 5 month Residential Phase, students live on site at one of the three locations: Camp Minden near Shreveport, Training Center-Pineville near Alexandria, and The Gillis W. Long Center near Baton Rouge.

Applicants must be between 16-18 years old by the start of the academys academic cycle. Additionally, the applicant must have never been adjudicated or convicted of a felony and have no legal action pending, be willing to become/stay drug tobacco-free; and be physically and mentally able to complete the program.
Youth ChalleNGe is a well-established program and operates 40 program sites in 28 states plus Puerto Rico.
