The Town of Normal Water uses ground water provided by 12 wells supplied by the Banner Quench (Mahomet-Sankoty Aquifer) and Glasford Wedron Formations. Eight wells are located within the corporate limits of Normal and four wells are located west of Normal.
Water resources are essential for sustaining economic prosperity, environmental and public health, and quality of life in the region. The leading sources of water in the region are Lake Michigan, groundwater aquifers, and the Fox and Kankakee Rivers.
Threats To Our Water Many Illinois rivers, streams, and lakes are contaminated with E. coli bacteria; contain fish that have been exposed to mercury and PCBs; exhibit low oxygen levels; and contain excessive phosphorus, manganese, siltation, suspended solids, and algae, all of which negatively impact aquatic life.
The types of water resources include surface water (rivers, lakes, reservoirs), groundwater (aquifers), rainwater, glaciers and ice caps, and desalinated water (obtained through desalination of seawater).
The Aqua Illinois water system, located at the intersection of Midlothian and Old McHenry Roads, includes two groundwater wells, an ion exchange system to treat the water supply, and a 370,000-gallon water storage reservoir.
