The federal Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) enrollment was frozen in February 2024 and subsidies ended in May 2024. To date, no action has been taken by Congress to extend ACP. This leaves 5.8 million California Households who were eligible for ACP without an assurance of affordable Internet Service.
Due to a lack of additional funding from Congress, the ACP ran out of funds and has ended for now, effective June 1, 2024. As a result, all ACP households will no longer receive the ACP discount.
The Affordable Connectivity Program ended in 2024, leaving an estimated 5 million households disconnected from the internet. The internet subsidy for low-income households provided more than 23 million homes in the US with $30 to $75 per month off their internet bills.
The ACP ended on June 1, 2024. At one time, over 23 million households received ACP support. No single alternative exists that would fully replace ACP.
What does wind-down mean for the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP)? The wind-down is happening because the $14.2 billion allocated to fund the ACP will run out at the end of April 2024 unless Congress takes action to extend it. Due to the current lack of additional funding, the FCC has begun to wind down the ACP.
