Family Code section 3153 states that the court will order payment of reasonable fees to minors counsel by the parties or by the county. Whether or not the parties will have to pay for minors counsel depends on the financial status of the parties.
A: Child support payments in California are largely determined by the parents combined incomes, so the amount that people throughout the state pay can vary drastically. However, it is believed that, on average, residents of California paying child support pay between $400-500 per child every month.
The judge can order your spouse or the other parent to pay for all or part of the costs. Even if you have some money to pay for a lawyer, if the other person has a lot more money, the court can order them to help pay some of your fees.
The court must appoint an attorney to represent the child. A parent can request an attorney be appointed or if both parents are in agreement, they can enter into a stipulation for Minors Counsel to be appointed. However, only the Judge can actually appoint Minors Counsel.
(2) If the child indicating an interest in addressing the court is 14 years old or older, the judicial officer must hear from that child unless the court makes a finding that addressing the court is not in the childs best interest and states the reasons on the record.
