The Queensland Government provides assistance with school transport costs for eligible students travelling to and from school under the School Transport Assistance Scheme (STAS). STAS assistance is available for all government funded bus and ferry services (including TransLink and qConnect services).
The school transport scheme provides transport for children who live 3.2km or more from their local primary school. Bus ireann operates the school transport service on behalf of the Department of Education and Youth who funds the scheme. Applications for school transport services in 2025-2026 are open.
The School Subsidy Scheme (SSS) is an ongoing annual program with a total funding pool of $10 million (excludes GST) to assist Queensland state schools with innovative facility projects that enhance learning outcomes for students and the community. The maximum subsidy value per project is $500,000.
Students may be eligible for conveyance allowance if: their nearest state primary school is more than 3.2km away. their nearest state secondary school is more than 4.8km away. non-state school students must live the required distance from both the nearest state and non-state school.
The Victorian Patient Transport Assistance Scheme (VPTAS) helps eligible Victorians and an approved escort(s) who have to travel a long way for specialist medical treatment by subsidising their travel and accommodation costs.
