Get Ready for Your Tattoo Apprenticeship Spend time developing your portfolio. You can show your different styles and abilities. Look at taking some tattoo classes and developing your skills. Meet with potential mentors and find out if they offer apprenticeship programs.
After using paper, you can start practicing your drawing on irregularly shaped objects with contours to mimic the human body. Try tattooing an apple, a lighter, or an old piece of pipe. This will help to prepare you to work on different parts of the body that have curves and contours.
Contracts that state youre not allowed to tattoo in a certain radius of the shop and/ or contracts that say you have to pay a bunch of money for leaving an apprenticeship. I also would raise flags if the contract states you must work at the shop for x amount of time after you complete it.
It can seem relentless at times, especially at the beginning. I dont think tattooing becomes easier the longer you do it. You just get used to the long hours and hard work. From the beginning, a lot can be asked of you as an apprentice.
To be a tattoo artist, you wont need schooling. Most artists start off as an apprentice at a shop and are asked to help around with inventory, cleaning, etc. In return you get lessons during slow times on the art of tattooing. They will teach you the techniques and give you practice on practice skin (or each other!).
