According to the US Department of Labor, children aged 14 and older can work in various non-hazardous jobs. However, since you are 13, your options are more restricted. You may be able to work in certain roles like babysitting or doing light chores for neighbors or family friends.
Apply with the Department of Revenue (DOR) for a minor work permit. LI reviews all minor work permit requests. Once approved, DOR will issue a new business license with your endorsement. You must post this new business license once you receive it and renew it with DOR every year.
Hiring Minors Under the Age of 14 As stated earlier, the legal working age in Washington State is 14. However, in certain instances, employers may hire someone younger. In order to hire a minor under the age of 14, employers need to get permission from a superior court judge in the county where the minor lives.
An employer of a prospective employee aged 13 or 14 years should get obtain written parental permission to the child commencing work. The penalty for contravening this requirement is a fine of up to $24,000 or $120,000 for a corporation. A template parental permission form is available below to assist employers.
