he Summer Meals Act of 2024 would increase the reach of the Summer Nutrition Programs. The Summer Nutrition Programs help close the summer nutrition gap and support educational and enrichment programs that keep children learning, engaged, and safe when school is out.
Children from families whose income is at or below the levels are eligible for free or reduced-price meals or milk at participating schools and agencies. Families may apply for free or reduced-price meals or free milk for their children for school/program year 2024-25 ing to guidelines effective July 1, 2024.
The Summer Food Service Program provides meals to children in low-income areas when school is not in session. Throughout South Dakota, sponsors such as schools, private non-profit organization, and government entities participate in providing meals during school vacations.
The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) began in 1968. It was an amendment to the National School Lunch Act. Today, the SFSP is the largest federal resource available for local sponsors who want to combine a child nutrition program with a summer activity program.
