Common pleas courts may include separate general, domestic relations, probate, and juvenile divisions, or combinations thereof.
The nations 94 district or trial courts are called U.S. district courts.

There can be an overlap between the case-types, as some offences can be heard in either court. But as a general rule the more serious offences will proceed to the District court while the less serious ones will stay in the Local court.
The district court is very different than most municipal courts. The district court is more formal, will require more court appearances by the defendant, it has more procedural safeguards and it has the ability to have trials to a jury.
