Training and Certification Home health aides need less formal education, with many states requiring only a high school diploma and completion of a brief training program. CNAs, however, must complete a state-approved training program and pass a competency exam to become certified.
Nurse Aides who have passed a state exam are called Certified Nursing Assistants, or CNAs. Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and Registered Nurses (RNs) are required to pass state board examinations and practice under a license. Working under the supervision of Registered Nurses, Nurse Aides provide bedside care.
Student must complete the state-approved Nurse Aide I training program. If you did not complete a North Carolina state-approved training but wish to test, you may be eligible for a training waiver. Please review the Candidate Handbook or visit the North Carolina website.
To become a Nurse Aide I, one must do one of the following: Pass state-approved Nurse Aide I training and competency testing. Pass state-approved Nurse Aide I competency testing once a training waiver has been reviewed and approved. Request listing based on a qualified N.C. nursing license.
