VA will pay up to $2,000 toward burial expenses for deaths on or after September 11, 2001, or up to $1,500 for deaths prior to September 11, 2001. If the Veteran is buried in a VA national cemetery, some or all of the cost of transporting the deceased may be reimbursed.
Spouses and dependents are not eligible for a Government-furnished headstone or marker unless they are buried in a national cemetery, state Veterans cemetery, or military post/base cemetery.
Burial of eligible veterans and dependents is at no cost when interred at a national cemetery.
SBP is a type of insurance plan the deceased veteran elects upon retirement from military service, which paid in monthly premiums that may provide coverage to beneficiaries of up to 55% of the veterans retirement pay. Beneficiaries may include the surviving spouse, former spouse, children or a disabled dependent.
Neither the VA nor individual branches of the military will pay for the cost of a casket unless the soldier dies while on active duty. However, the VA will provide an upright headstone or flat marker for any eligible veteran. These can be given regardless of whether the veteran is buried in a civilian or a VA cemetery.
