You must file a claim for a non-service-connected burial allowance within 2 years after the Veterans burial or cremation. If a Veterans discharge was changed after death from dishonorable to another status, you must file for an allowance claim within 2 years after the discharge update.
To apply, submit: VA Form 40-10007, Application for Pre-Need Determination of Eligibility for Burial in a VA National Cemetery; and. Proof of military service, such as a DD Form 214, if available (VA will attempt to locate documents that the Veteran or eligible party cannot locate).
To apply for burial benefits, complete VA Form 21-530, Application for Burial Benefits. Attach a copy of the veterans military discharge document (DD Form 214 or equivalent), death certificate, and funeral and burial bills. The bills should indicate they have paid them in full.
You can apply to find out in advance if you can be buried in a VA national cemetery. This is called a pre-need determination of eligibilityand it can help make the burial planning process easier for your family members in their time of need.
If youre the surviving spouse or child of a service member who died while on active duty, your military casualty assistance officer will help you to complete an Application for DIC, Death Pension, and/or Accrued Benefits by a Surviving Spouse or Child (VA Form 21P-534a).
