DA FORM 2627-1, OCT 2011 Article 15, UCMJ, is a federal law that permits commanding officers to conduct non-judicial proceedings for minor offenses. A Soldier may refuse Article 15 proceedings and demand trial by court-martial, unless attached to or embarked on a vessel.
How long does an article 15 stay on your record?
Under Article 15, a commanding officer can impose penalties such as reduction in rank, extra duties, restriction to base, forfeiture of pay, or written reprimands. Confinement (jail time) or a dishonorable discharge cannot be given as NJP punishments.
