The Uniform Hazardous Waste Manifest is the shipping document that travels with hazardous waste from the point of generation, through transportation, to the final treatment, storage, and disposal facility (TSDF).
Manifest document number means the U.S. EPA 12 digit identification number assigned to the Generator plus an optional unique 5 digit document number assigned to the Manifest by the generator for recording and reporting purposes.
However, 40 CFR 262.21(f)(5) requires the manifest to be printed as six-copy forms. Knowing the required distribution of the Manifest is of critical importance to a hazardous waste generator.
(a) A transporter of hazardous waste must keep a copy of the manifest signed by the generator, himself, and the next designated transporter or the owner or operator of the designated facility for a period of three years from the date the hazardous waste was accepted by the initial transporter.
If the manifest is a paper copy, the rail company must sign the manifest at the rail company office. The manifest copy then goes to the next non-rail transporter or receiving facility.
