What is the purpose of NEM?

What is Net Energy Metering (NEM)? NEM allows a customer to receive money back on their electricity bill when their solar or wind power system generates more electricity than is used on-site.

Why are my NEM charges so high in California?

Reduced Export Credit Rates: Newer policies (like NEM 3.0 in California) often lower the value of the credits you earn for sending excess power to the grid. This means youre getting less compensation for the solar energy you export, increasing your overall costs.

What is a NEM contract?

Net Energy Metering (NEM) is a rate option that allows customers with an eligible renewable generating system to receive a credit for the surplus electricity supplied to the electric grid. This credit is applied to their energy bill to offset all or part of the costs associated with the energy consumed each month.

What is net energy charge?

Under NEM 2.0, net metering policies have a one-to-one offset, meaning the price of a kWh supplied to the grid is equal to the price of pulling a kWh off the grid. NEM 3.0 will change this price ratio. Under NEM 2.0 customers can elect a rate schedule as long as it was time-of-use (TOU).

Why do utilities not like net metering?

Once someone has gone solar, their electric bill is reduced, if not eliminated (down to a minimum fee, somewhere around $12/mo to stay hooked up to the grid). The utilities argue that once this has happened, the solar customer now relies on the grid but doesnt pay their fair share to help maintain the grid.
