Salvage title and rebuilt title are both terms used to describe cars that have been declared totaled by an insurance company. The key difference is what has happened to the vehicle since. Cars get a salvage title when an insurer deems them a total loss and a rebuilt title after they are repaired to a drivable state.
Its actually illegal to drive a car with a salvage title in most states. The purpose of the salvage title is for record keeping purposes while the car is being salvaged or resold. After the car is fixed, you take it to the state and they can give it a new title, usually called a rebuilt title, before you can drive it.
If you want to title a rebuilt salvage vehicle, it must first pass a DMV examination to ensure the vehicle and its parts are in safe operating condition and have not been stolen.
Its generally a bad idea - its difficult to verify what was damaged and how it was repaired, and rebuilt vehicles are more difficult to finance and insure. For these reasons, rebuilt vehicles are considered to be worth half that of a vehicle with a clean title as a rule of thumb.
Salvage vehicles are not road worthy and cannot be driven on public roadways until they are properly inspected by the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Replacement/Salvage Replacement Title: A replacement title is issued when the current title needs to be updated, or if the title is defaced or destroyed.

As a general rule of thumb, no, in the majority of cases it is not worth buying a salvage title car and ``having it repaired. In general, cars are totalled for a reason, and that reason, in general, is because it costs more to repair them than theyre worth.
