50 percent fee waiver reduction To review any waiver eligibility, refer to rule 2.16 of the Rules of the State Bar of California. Pursuant to rule 2.16(c), licensees who have a total gross annual household income from all sources of $20,000 or less may request a 50 percent waiver of annual fees.
The due date is by March 30, or the next business day if that date falls on a weekend or holiday, each year during the annual license renewal process. The 2025 annual deadline is April 1, 2025. If you miss the deadline, you will be charged a penalty ($103 for active attorneys, $31 for inactive attorneys).
Pursuant to rule 2.2(c) of the Rules of the State Bar of California, you are required to verify the information in your Attorney Record during the annual license renewal process each year.
To be considered for the application fee waiver, you must be: An undergraduate student (you cannot be in an extension program) A California resident for more than one year. A U.S. citizen or someone without lawful immigration status who qualifies for an AB540 non-resident tuition exception.
Inactive. Inactive licensees have chosen this status voluntarily and may transfer to active at any time upon application of all required fees and compliance, if necessary with any fingerprinting requirements. Not Eligible to Practice Law.
