The Coast Guard protected the nation throughout its long history and served proudly in the majority of the nations conflicts.
Following the enactment of the Homeland Security Act of 2002, The Coast Guard was transferred from Department of Transportation to the Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003 (116 Stat. 2135).
While on a day-to-day basis the USCG falls under the jurisdiction of the Department of Transportation (DoT), the USCG is at all times an armed forcea full time military organization with a true peacetime mission.
The Coast Guard itself was moved to the Department of Transportation in 1967, and on 1 March 2003 it became part of the Department of Homeland Security.
The Coast Guard was established in 1790. During times of peace it falls under the Department of Homeland Security. Upon the declaration of war or when the President directs, the Coast Guard operates under the authority of the Department of the Navy.
