The Motor Assessment Scale (MAS) is a clinical assessment tool that evaluates eight areas of motor function in recovering stroke patients (Carr, Shepherd, Nordholm, Lynne, 1985). The MAS uses tasks related to activities of daily living to measure the full range of functional motor performance in stroke survivors.
A score of 4 on this item indicates a consistently normal response, a score 4 indicates persistent hypertonus, and a score 4 indicates various degrees of hypotonus. The 9 items assessment evaluates 5 Mobility and 3 Upper Limb activities, and 1 the severity of involuntary movements UMN lesions (clonus):
The Motor Status Scale (MSS) measures shoulder, elbow (maximum score = 40), wrist, hand, and finger move- ments (maximum score = 42), and expands the meas- urement of upper extremity impairment and disability provided by the Fugl-Meyer (FM) score.
The Motor Function Measurement (MFM) is a quantitative scale that measures motor functional abilities in a person with neuromuscular disease.
How is the MAS scored? Each of the items is scored on a 7 point hierarchical difficulty scale. A score of 0 indicates the individual is unable to complete any of the tasks within a category. A score of 6 implies the individual is not only able to perform the most difficult task, but also all lower scored tasks.
