To prepare for your colposcopy, your doctor may recommend that you: Avoid scheduling your colposcopy during your period. Don't have vaginal intercourse the day or two before your colposcopy. Don't use tampons the day or two before your colposcopy. Don't use vaginal medications for the two days before your colposcopy.
This may take 2\u20133 weeks, depending on the environment.
Your doctor can use a colposcopy to diagnose cervical cancer, genital warts, vaginal cancer, and vulvar cancer, as well. Once your doctor gets the results from your colposcopy, they'll know whether or not you need further tests.
Acetic acid wash: After the cervix is studied with the colposcope, the cervix is washed with a chemical called acetic acid, which is diluted 3 to 5%. The acetic acid washes away mucus and allows abnormal areas to be seen more easily with the colposcope. Moreover, the acetic acid stains the abnormal areas white.
If you feel like this, contact your GP or the colposcopy clinic where you had your treatment. It takes four to six weeks for your cervix to heal. To reduce the risk of infection during this time, you should avoid sexual contact or wearing tampons. It is advisable to wear sanitary towels during this time.

Colposcopy treatment If treatment is needed, the aim is to remove the abnormal cervical cells while preserving as much normal tissue as possible. The most common treatment is large loop excision of the transformation zone (LLETZ). The transformation zone is the area of tissue just at the entrance of the birth canal.
After the procedure, the provider will stop the bleeding with ferric subsulfate, a yellow liquid bandage, or silver nitrate. The colposcopy usually lasts about fifteen minutes. You may experience vaginal bleeding after the colposcopy, especially if the provider performs biopsies.
Most colposcopists use a combination of acetic acid and Schiller's iodine tests: Acetic acid is a very weak acidic liquid. It is sometimes called dilute vinegar. The colposcopist will gently apply it to your cervix using a cotton wool ball or with a spray.
A colposcopy is nearly pain-free. You might feel pressure when the speculum goes in. It might also sting or burn a little when they wash your cervix with the vinegar-like solution. If you get a biopsy, you might have some discomfort.
