What is victim compensation? Victim compensation is a direct financial reimbursement to a victim for an expense that resulted from a crime, such as medical costs or lost wages. Each state has a crime victim compensation program that allocates funds to survivors of sexual assault and other violent crimes.
To be eligible for Crime Victims Compensation benefits, a victim must require medical or mental health treatment because of injuries suffered as a result of a crime. A surviving spouse or beneficiary of the victim may be able to file a claim. The program does not pay for property losses.
This reimbursement is called restitution, and it may be ordered for lost income, property damage, counseling, medical expenses, funeral costs or other financial costs directly related to the crime.
The Illinois Crime Victims Compensation Program offers reimbursement up to $45,000 ($27,000 for crimes before 8/7/22) for expenses incurred by eligible victims as a result of a violent crime.
