The difference between an aerial lift and a scissor lift is that scissor lifts can only extend horizontally, and do not have the same reach power. Think of aerial lifts as a more versatile elevated work platform. Aerial lifts, unlike aerial scissor lifts or vertical scissor lifts, are typically used outdoors.
To reduce the risk of tilting, short metal legs called outriggers are attached to aerial work platforms (AWPs). The purpose of outriggers on scissor lifts and other AWPs is to help keep them stable. Aerial lift tip-overs and scissor lift tip-overs can result from either failing to use or incorrectly using outriggers.
There are three main types of aerial lift equipment scissor lifts, boom lifts and telehandlers. Each lift type has unique features that make it well-suited for different operations.
Globally, MEWP is the term most commonly used to refer to these machines, but they are referred to by many other names, including aerial (or access) platforms, aerial work platforms (AWP), cherry pickers, elevating work platforms (EWP) and lift platforms.
Work Zone Inspections Items to look for include: An aerial lift is any vehicle-mounted device used to elevate personnel, including: Extendable boom platforms, Aerial ladders, Articulating (jointed) boom platforms, Vertical towers, and Any combination of the above.
