Therese of Lisieux, better known as St. Therese of the child Jesus was born Marie Francoise Therese Martin. She felt an early call to religious life, and overcoming various obstacles, in 1888 at the age of 15, became a Nun and joined two of her elder sisters in the cloistered Carmelite Community of Lisieux, Normandy.
Thrse was the odd one out at school. She enjoyed playing hermits with her cousin. One of the hardest parts of entering Carmel was telling her father. She entered Carmel committed to holding nothing back for God. The night before her profession, she was tempted to leave Carmel.
Thrse of Lisieux: Thrse became a saint because of the way she responded wholeheartedly to Gods love and the grace of the Holy Spirit within her. We believe that God embraced her upon her death and shared with her the risen life of Jesus in Heaven.
Therese Martin was the last of nine children born to Louis and Zelie Martin on January 2, 1873, in Alencon, France. However, only five of these children lived to reach adulthood. Precocious and sensitive, Therese needed much attention. Her mother died when she was 4 years old.
