Cremation is a legal method of disposition in the United States, and laws regarding cremation vary by state. In general, state laws require that a deceased persons remains be cremated by a licensed crematory operator and that certain procedures be followed to ensure the proper identification of the remains.
While no state regulations exist for scattering ashes on private property with landowner permission, some local authorities may require permits for public parks or lands. Its best to check with your local city or county for specific regulations.
Cremated Remains must be shipped using Priority Mail Express (or Priority Mail Express International) service. Priority Mail Express comes with USPS Tracking. No other service is permitted. You can visit your local Post Office to have the package shipped.
This is accomplished by heating the body, which contains between 65% and 85% water by weight, to a temperature high enough to facilitate the combustion process. Laws for required temperatures vary by state, but the cremation process usually occurs between 1400 and 1600 degrees F.
Customers are required to use the new orange Label 139, Cremated Remains, or the new Priority Mail Express Cremated Remains box (BOX-CRE). The label has been updated but existing labels can be used until their supply is depleted.
