Medicare has different codes for vaccine administration, so for Medicare patients the practice should use G0008, Administration of influenza virus vaccine, and G0009, Administration of pneumococcal vaccine, in addition to the appropriate codes for the vaccines themselves.
2025;50(5):21-25. ABSTRACT: Streptococcus pneumoniae is a common bacterial cause of pneumonia and meningitis. The CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recently expanded its age-based recommendation for a pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) to include all adults aged 50 years and older.
These initial administration codes (CPT 90471, and 90473) cannot be billed together on the same date of service and cannot be billed more than once per day. CPT 90480 can be used for COVID-19 vaccine administration in addition to CPT 90471 or 90473 for another vaccine given on the same day.
The 90460 code is used when a physician is present and performs face-to-face counseling to the caregiver or parent. This code can only be used for patients through age 18. Code 90471 is used when the drug is administrated by a medical assistant or nurse and the patient does not see the physician at all.
