It is a maximal aerobic fitness test, where the participants run 20m shuttles at increasing speeds. The speeds and levels of the 20 meter PACER test is based on the original details of the shuttle run test developed by Leger et al. (1988). There is also a 15m PACER test for use where space is limited.
The FitnessGram PACER Test is a multistage aerobic capacity test that progressively gets more difficult as it continues. The test is used to measure a student's aerobic capacity as part of the FitnessGram assessment. Students run back and forth as many times as they can, each lap signaled by a beep sound.

In the PACER test, a lap is one 20-meter distance (from one end to the other). Have the scorer record the lap number (crossing off each lap number) on a PACER score sheet (samples provided in appendix B). The recorded score is the total number of laps com- pleted by the student.
McClain et al. (2006) list the details up to level 15, though the test goes up to 21 levels. The details of the higher levels were determined from the audio track of the tests.
