The tuberculosis skin test is another name for the tuberculin test or PPD test. The PPD test determines if someone has developed an immune response to the bacterium that causes tuberculosis (TB). Blood tests for TB are also available, and health care professionals may use them in place of the PPD skin test.
During one visit to a doctor's office or clinic, a tiny amount of tuberculin is injected under the skin, usually in the forearm. Tuberculin is a sterile extract purified protein derivative (PPD) made from the bacteria that cause TB. After receiving the injection, a small, pale bump will form at the site.
Aplisol (tuberculin PPD, diluted) is a sterile aqueous solution of a purified protein fraction for intradermal administration as an aid in the diagnosis of tuberculosis. The solution is stabilized with polysorbate (Tween) 80, buffered with potassium and sodium phosphates and contains 0.25% phenol as a preservative.
