When the Iowa child labor law went into effect on July 1, 2023, it expanded the hours that 14- and 15-year-olds can work. It also allows employers to hire minors for tasks that were once prohibited.
In Iowa, both federal and state child labor laws apply. Effective July 1, 2023, Iowa child labor permits are no longer required. Youth may perform certain work activities based on their ages. Certain work activities involving hazardous equipment or hazardous materials are not permitted.
A minor must be at least 14 years of age to be employed. Some exceptions are allowed. All minor employees are prohibited doing certain dangerous tasks or to be employed in dangerous occupations.
What hours can 14- or 15-year-olds work? Outside school hours, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., from the day after Labor Day (in September) through May 31, and no more than four hours per day, Monday through Friday, or eight hours per day on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.
