What is an Acceptable Driving Record for CDL? A good driving record is usually one in which the CDL holder has few violations, no major offenses, such as driving under the influence (DUI), and no safety compliance issues.
The certificate of violations regulation requires each driver to furnish the carrier with a list of all violations of motor vehicle traffic laws and ordinances (of which the driver has been convicted, or as a result of which he/she has forfeited bond or collateral) during the preceding twelve months.
This requirement is largely duplicative of a separate rule that requires each motor carrier to make an annual inquiry to obtain the motor vehicle record (MVR) for each driver it employs from every State in which the driver holds or has held a CMV operators license or permit in the past year.
Employers should look for evidence of any accidents first, then for traffic infractions and citations from the police. Offenses such as careless or reckless driving, DUI, and other serious abuses of road rules may be red flags and should become a topic for discussion with the applicant.
(a) Except as provided in subpart G of this part, each motor carrier shall, at least once every 12 months, make an inquiry to obtain the motor vehicle record of each driver it employs, covering at least the preceding 12 months, to each drivers licensing authority where the driver held a commercial motor vehicle
