The Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS) and its companion scale, the Social Phobia Scale (SPS), were developed in response to the need for instruments that assess various commonly feared social situations (Mattick & Clark, 1998).
Scoring is easily accomplished by summing scores for items. The total score ranges from 0–63. The following guidelines are recommended for the interpretation of scores: 0–9, normal or no anxiety; 10–18, mild to moderate anxiety; 19–29, moderate to severe anxiety; and 30–63, severe anxiety.
The SPAI assesses specific somatic symptoms, cognitions, and behaviors across a wide range of potentially fear-producing situations to measure social anxiety and fear. SPAI results are particularly useful for discriminating between panic disorder, agoraphobia, and social phobia.

The measure was designed to encompass the full range of the two domains—performance situations and social interactions—persons with social phobia fear and avoid.
Results are calculated by reversing the scoring of three positively worded items on the SIAS (items 5, 9, and 11) and summing up the scores. Thus, for both scales, the scores may range from 0 to 80, with higher scores indicating more discomfort or anxiety.
