IMPORTANT NOTE: A student can travel outside the U.S. while an OPT application is pending as long as they re-enter the U.S. before their program completion date.

Can you travel during grace period?

This is called the \u201cGrace Period.\u201d The grace period allows participants to travel in the U.S. and/or to prepare for and depart the United States. It is not to be used for any other purpose (including working, as well as departing the U.S. and attempting to reenter again during that grace period).

Post-completion and STEM OPT: You are eligible to travel abroad on a temporary basis (less than 5 months) and re-enter the U.S to continue employment.

Can you leave the country if you have OPT?

After graduation, if your post-completion OPT has been approved and your EAD issued, you can travel and reenter the U.S. only if you have proof of employment. If you are still looking for practical training opportunities, you should not travel internationally.

How long is grace after OPT?
